Zoom talk on cancer immunotherapy
Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach offers a free session on immunotherapy led by Dr. Jenny Ru of California Hematology Oncology Medical Group; Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program will cover the immune system as it pertains to cancer, different types of cancer immunotherapy, the importance of immunotherapy, and eligibility requirements for treatment. LA Kings benefit run
The LA Kings 5K in Redondo Beach is back, signaling the start of the 2021-22 NHL season. But before the team hits the ice, it will make an appearance in the streets of Riviera Village. Participants can run, glide, skip or skate their way through downtown and beside the ocean for 3.1 miles. Entry fees include a ticket for a 2021-22 LA Kings home game, a race t-shirt and participant medal. All proceeds benefit Kings Care Foundation. Registration will be open the day of the event and also a day ahead, on Sept. 17, from 2 to 7 p.m. at The Point, 850 S. Sepulveda Blvd. in El Segundo. Young artist show at Resin Gallery
Join the South Bay Artist Collective’s Young Artist Society for its first show at the Resin Gallery, 618 Cypress Ave. in Hermosa Beach, from 4 to 9 p.m. The evening features works by artists aged 15-25, live painting demonstrations, and performances by local youth bands including The Meerkats from 5 to 7 p.m. and Raccoon Union from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is free and families are welcome.
Torrance Art Museum fall reception
Torrance Art Museum (TAM) opens its Fall 2021 exhibition with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. The featured collection, a boundary-crossing “SUR:Biennial” fiber art show, returns with a lineup of artists from the U.S. with pluralistic cultural heritages. Their work celebrates, critiques and redefines notions of Latinx, Latin American and Xicana/o (Chicana/o) identities. The museum’s Gallery Two hosts “Social Fabric” which uses a tongue-in-cheek approach in fiber art to investigate the framework and constructs of contemporary society. Another exhibit in the TAM Dark Room hosts “VideoWords,” art that uses 15 pairs of words as thematic prompts for reinterpretation. The museum is at 3320 Civic Center Dr. Its regular hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
See Beyond the Hill conference
Respected speakers, both local and international, are on the schedule at “See Beyond the Hill” from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mary and Joseph Retreat Center, 5300 Crest Rd. in Rancho Palos Verdes. The conference goal is to connect and highlight accomplishments of Palos Verdes Peninsula women, while raising money to support education. American actress, dancer, model and martial-arts instructor Eve Torres Gracie is the keynote speaker. In the evening, the event transitions to a cocktail party with opera music, contemporary music, ballroom dancers and a mini-fashion show. Tickets are $109. Online session on chronic leukemia
Join others affected by chronic blood cancers at a Zoom workshop from the Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The discussion will be led by oncology and hematology specialist Dr. Wade Nishimoto with a focus on chronic lymphocytic leukemia and chronic myeloid leukemia. Evening yoga on Redondo Pier
Weekly sessions of outdoor yoga occur on Fisherman’s Wharf, at the west end of Redondo Beach Pier, Wednesdays throughout September from 6 to 7 p.m.; weather permitting. Bring a yoga mat, towel and water; face covering recommended. In addition to the evening sessions, a morning class occurs the second Saturday of every month on the Boardwalk from 10 to 11 a.m.. Redondo police pink hair pledge
The Redondo Beach police hope to raise $5,000 in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October); and one officer will dye his hair pink if the Sept. 30 goal is met. Donations benefit the City of Hope and can be made on Venmo with the the user name RBPDPINK.
Virtual Taste at the Beach auction
Hermosa Beach Kiwanis hosts Taste at the Beach 2021, an online silent auction offering gift cards for gourmet food, beverages, gifts, services and more from local restaurants and shops. The gift cards were purchased by Kiwanis during the COVID lockdown to help businesses. Now the cards are being auctioned with proceeds going to charities. Bidding goes from Sept. 18 to Oct. 3. ESMoA invites film submissions
The El Segundo Museum of Art invites submissions for its December film and video exhibit, “Blue/s.” The show’s theme incorporates color, shades, reflections, harmony, mood, peace, music, heritage, flow, rebirth, cosmos, artificiality and more. Make a 60-second film and submit it to the ESMoA Video Art + Film Festival: Blue/s. The deadline for submissions is Saturday, October 23, at 5 p.m. Films will be reviewed by judges from the El Segundo and Los Angeles arts community. Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital and the Redondo Pier Association presents the annual Rods, Rides & Relics Car Show on Sunday, Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A favorite with local car enthusiasts, the show features about 100 of the finest classic cars in the South Bay. Knights of Columbus tri-tip dinner
The Redondo Beach Knights of Columbus plans a Tri-Tip To-Go fundraiser in support of seminarians. Matt Johnson Memorial Blood Drive
Blood donations are welcome at the 21st annual Matt Johnson Memorial Blood Drive, Saturday, Oct. 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Manhattan Beach Fire Station at 400 5th Street. Manhattan Beach native Matt Johnson passed away in November 2000 at age 14 after a two-year battle with leukemia. Matt’s legacy is the blood drive that bears his name, bringing the gift of life to others.
