Sioux Falls School District warns students could face criminal charges tied to TikTok trend

The Sioux Falls School District sent an email to families at 10 p.m. Tuesday night warning them of a concerning TikTok trend turning up in schools.

A challenge on the viral social media platform encourages students to steal or destroy something they find at school, and then post a picture of the item they've broken or stolen as a "trophy," district spokesperson DeeAnn Konrad said in the email.

Several schools in Sioux Falls and the U.S. are seeing this concerning behavior, Konrad said, and students are facing discipline for it.

"Theft and vandalism have school consequences that include suspensions and the loss of privileges," Konrad said. "These cases will also be referred to the police for charges."

Konrad asks parents and guardians to talk with their student about this viral trend and make expectations known to them.

It's unclear how much damage has been done or what the value of the property damage so far may be, as well as how many students have been disciplined so far.

But Sioux Falls police spokesman Sam Clemens said he looked back several weeks and only found one report of a juvenile stealing school property.
