VOTE: Southern California Boys Athlete of the Week, September 17

Each week, publications from the Southern California News Group’s 11 properties (Orange County Register, L.A. Daily News, Press-Enterprise, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Long Beach Press-Telegram, The Daily Breeze, San Bernardino Sun, Daily Bulletin, Redlands Daily Facts, Whittier Daily News and Pasadena-Star News) select the Athletes of the Week for their respective region.

Each athlete is then entered into the overall Southern California Athlete of the Week vote.

Click on the newspaper links below the athlete’s name to read about their performance from last week, and then vote for who you think deserves the top honor.

Readers are allowed to vote multiple times. Voting ends at midnight, but final totals aren’t always immediately reflected due to processing.

Dylan Gebbia, Alemany: Gebbia was stellar in Alemany’s first win over Oaks Christian as he threw for 292 yards on 13 of 17 passing and three touchdowns. He added 10 rushes for 101 yards and three scores, totaling six touchdowns in the Warriors’ 56-21 win.

Jesse Carmona, Ganesha: Carmona rushed for 300 yards and five touchdowns and also completed 7 of 14 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Giants to a 48-34 nonleague win over Pomona. That victory was Ganesha’s first over Pomona since 1978, snapping a 17-game skid in the series. Carmona topped the 3,000-yard passing mark for his career and moved within 82 yards of 3,000 career rushing yards. He also kicked six extra points in the game and registered four tackles on defense.

Elijah Mitchell, El Rancho: The Dons’ senior quarterback is one of the area passing leaders and he has helped his squad to a 4-0 start. He had his best game of the season in last week’s 41-16 victory over Montebello. He completed 16 of 21 passes for 274 yards and threw four touchdown passes, which included an 84-yard scoring pass.

Jakob Galloway, Banning: Galloway, a San Jose State commit, didn’t need a breakout game, but he turned in one just in case you hadn’t noticed him. The senior running back rushed for 385 yards on 31 carries with four touchdowns in a 54-40 win over North Torrance.

Darius Cowens, Pacifica: The Mariners quarterback produced 457 total yards in their 54-49 nonleague win over Canyon. Cowens (6-2, 185) completed 16 of 29 passes for 299 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. “Darious was cramping really badly (late in the game),” Pacifica coach Vinnie Lopez said. “But we said, ‘Dude, you’re going to have to run the ball at the end here.’ So he’s running around stiff-legged, still getting 30 yards a pop.”

Malachi Nelson, Los Alamitos: The Oklahoma-bound quarterback threw for 370 yards and two touchdowns and ran for the winning score as the Griffins rallied for a 34-31 victory at Clovis Buchanan, the CIF Central Section’s No. 1 team. Nelson completed 27 of 35 passes and connected with Makai Lemon on 64- and 18-yard TDs. Nelson’s 5-yard run with 3 minutes to play made the difference in the victory. He has completed 66 percent of his throws this season for 1,074 yards and 11 touchdowns with only three interceptions.
