Impairment is believed to be a factor in a crash near Southern Avenue and Hardy Drive that left a bicyclist with life-threatening injuries Tuesday morning, the Tempe Police Department said.

Police and Tempe Fire Medical Rescue personnel responded to the intersection at around 8 a.m. after receiving reports of a crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist, department spokesperson Det. Natalie Barela said.

Police believe the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Southern Avenue when it struck a bicyclist traveling northbound in the crosswalk on Hardy Drive, Barela said.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene while the bicyclist, an adult male, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Traffic restrictions remained in place Tuesday morning while officials continued the investigation. No further details were immediately available.
