1 dead, another injured in shooting in Wilmington's Hedgeville neighborhood Sunday night

One man is dead and another was injured Sunday night after the two were shot in Wilmington's Hedgeville neighborhood during a memorial for another young man who was killed in the area last year.

Wilmington police were called to Chestnut and South Harrison streets just after 9:15 p.m. for reports of the shooting.

There, officers found a 19-year-old man and a 23-year-old man injured. Paramedics took the teen to the hospital, where he died. The other man was taken to the hospital by private car.

Police will release the 19-year-old's name once the next of kin has been notified.

Residents told Delaware Online/The News Journal they heard dozens of shots ring out. Chalk circles, marking where shell casings landed, could be seen midway down the block on both Chestnut and South Harrison streets Monday morning.

The shooting, which occurred as friends of 19-year-old Taquan "Tink" Davis gathered on the one-year anniversary of his death, continued a violent weekend in Delaware in which four people were shot.

A 25-year-old man from New Jersey was shot several times early Saturday morning near New Castle after a fight broke out, Delaware State Police said. That incident occurred about 1:30 a.m.

Then, around 9:30 a.m. that same day, a 30-year-old man was shot while in the Evergreen Apartments in Bear after trying to break up a fight between two women.

Police said the man had driven a woman to the first block of Blatty Place for a custody exchange. The woman got out of his car and walked toward the apartment’s entrance, where she was confronted by another woman.

The two began to fight, police said.

The man got out of his car to get between the two women in an attempt to stop the fight. According to police, the women continued fighting and all three fell to the ground.

A 30-year-old man was shot while in the Evergreen Apartments in Bear after trying to break up a fight between two women, police said.

That's when the boyfriend of the second woman came out of the apartment and fired once at the man, hitting him in the hip.

The boyfriend then left but was arrested when he returned to the apartment later. He was charged with first-degree assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

He was released from custody after posting $30,000 secured bail.
