PLAYA DEL REY — A woman fatally struck by the driver of a Toyota 4Runner while crossing a Playa del Rey street was hailed as heroic by a relative Sunday.

The crash victim was identified as Wendy Galdamez Palma, according to the coroner’s office.

Relatives told FOX11 the Downey woman, 33, shielded her 3-year-old son, who was released from a hospital Sunday. They were attending a family bonfire.

Paramedics dispatched at 10:33 p.m. Saturday to the 8800 block of Vista Del Mar took the boy to an area hospital, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Palma was crossing the street with her child when she was struck by the vehicle, which then fled. She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Officer Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section.
