Arizona State football rewind: QB Jayden Daniels compiles 300 yards of offense

Arizona State pulled away from UNLV in the second half for a 37-10 victory Saturday night at Sun Devil Stadium.

Cristian Zendejas, who returned to the team this week after entering the transfer portal, kicked a field goal for the final Sun Devil points of the night.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels connected with LV Bunkley-Shelton for a 33-yard touchdown in the middle of the fourth quarter that put the Sun Devils up 34-10.

The touchdown pass was Daniels' second of the game. Bunkley-Shelton leads all ASU receivers with three catches for 42 yards. Daniels has thrown to six different players.

The short drive also saw the return of Daniyel Ngata, who had gone to the locker room with an apparent hand injury in the third quarter.

Also in the fourth quarter, running back Rachaad White found the end zone for the second time in the second half on a 1-yard one.

Cristian Zendejas missed the point after.

White has 22 carries for 90 yards.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels leads the Sun Devils with 125 yards on 13 carries.

Sun Devils up after three quarters

Faced with a third-and-8 Arizona State running back Rachaad White ran the ball 9 yards for a touchdown that gave the Sun Devils a 21-10 lead over UNLV with 45 seconds left in the third quarter.

White has 18 carries for 65 yards in the game. ASU is without running backs Daniyel Ngata and DeaMonte Trayanum. Ngata scored a touchdown earlier in the game, but left with an apparent hand injury in the third quarter. Trayanum did not dress for the game after being held out of practice all week with a leg bruise.

Justin Rogers entered the game at quarterback for UNLV on the next series. The possession lasted just 8 seconds as Rogers threw three incompletions before a punt put the ball back in ASU's hands.

Doug Brumfield started the game for the Rebels and was 6-for-14 passing for 60 yards. He left the game with an injury. Also on the sidelines for UNLV is Tate Martell. After being featured on the Netflix series QB1: Beyond the Lights in high school, Martell began his college career at Ohio State for two seasons before transferring to Miami. He landed at UNLV in late August.

The third quarter ended with the Sun Devils on the UNLV 34 following a personal foul penalty against the Rebels.

ASU running back leaves game

Arizona State's running backs found their stride early in the third quarter — at least until Daniyel Ngata left the field with an apparent hand injury.

After quarterback Jayden Daniels took the lead in rushing the ball in the first half, Daniyel Ngata and Rachaad White were shouldering the load after the break. Ngata, who scored a touchdown in the first half, came up after a tackle holding his hand. He left the field as officials reviewed the play for targeting, but didn't find any. The Sun Devils ended the possession with a punt, but still leading 14-10.

Daniels and Daniyel

Arizona State's Daniyel Ngata took his second carry of the game 13 yards for a go-ahead touchdown on a double-handoff play against UNLV Saturday night at Sun Devil Stadium.

Ricky Pearsall and Case Hatch had key blocks on the touchdown run that made the score 14-10.

Ngata hadn't touched the ball until carrying it 3 yards earlier in the drive.

The performance was a nice complement to quarterback Jayden Daniels, who had been doing the bulk of the running for ASU.

Since throwing his first-quarter interception,  Daniels has been 8-for-8 passing for 53 yards.

Daniels has accounted for 156 yards of offense. Six Sun Devils have caught passes, while only Daniels, Daniyel Ngata, and Rachaad White have rushed the ball. Daniels leads all ball-carriers with 80 yards on nine carries.

Both teams had another possession before the end of the half. UNLV was forced to punt for the first time after being backed up on a delay of game penalty, while ASU came up short on a fourth-down conversion attempt.

Beating the spread

Arizona State was a 34.5 point favorite against UNLV, but didn't seem to know that Saturday night.

Midway through the second quarter, ASU found itself trailing UNLV 10-7 after the Rebels used a 10-play 75-yard drive to score the go-ahead touchdown.

Doug Brumfield, getting his first career start, accounted for 90 yards on the Rebels first two drives — both of which ended with points. A 4-yard Brumfield run resulted in the touchdown.

Daniels fuels offense with legs, arm

Arizona State took the lead in the second quarter Saturday night on a 3-yard pass from Jayden Daniels to Johnny Wilson.

Cristian Zendejas added the point after for a 7-3 lead.

Daniels took the led in the ASU offense, rushing for 70 yards on five carries after the first two possessions for the Sun Devils.

Wilson was the target in the first quarter when Daniels threw his fourth career interception and the first of this season.

Capitalizing on an Arizona State turnover — just the fourth interception of junior quarterback Jayden Daniels' career — the UNLV Rebels scored with a 28-yard field goal midway through in the first quarter for a 3-0 lead.

ASU missing RB DeaMonte Trayanum

Arizona State will be without sophomore running back DeaMonte Trayanum, who is not dressed for the game Saturday against UNLV.

Trayanum had not practiced in the week leading up to the game

On six carries this season, he has 52 yards and two touchdowns.

ASU will rely primarily on Rachaad White and Daniyel Ngata, but quarterback Jayden Daniels is also capable of running the ball.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
