A man who sparked an hourslong SWAT situation Friday was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault in connection with a robbery and stabbing in Central El Paso.

The man, whose name has not been released, was arrested before 3:45 p.m. Friday on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, El Paso Police Department officials said.

The arrest came after a more than five-hour standoff between the suspect and the Police Department's SWAT unit after the suspect barricaded himself inside a home in the 2900 block of Yandell Drive, officials said.

The incident started when officers responded about 9 a.m. to a report of a robbery and stabbing in Central El Paso, police spokesman Javier Sambrano said.

An investigation revealed two victims, who are both in their early 20s, were robbed and assaulted before 6 a.m. by two suspects, Sambrano said.

One victim was stabbed and taken to a hospital. The victim is currently in stable condition, Sambrano said.

The other victim was assaulted but did not need to go to a hospital.

Officers then found one of the suspects barricaded inside the home.

The suspect was not complying with officers’ commands and refused to come out of the house, Sambrano said.

The standoff ended with police arresting the suspect at the house.

The other suspect still is sought by police, Sambrano said.

No further information has been released as the Police Department's Gang Unit continues its investigation into the incident.
