Central Florida labor lawyer reacts to President Biden's vaccine mandates
In an address to the nation, President Joe Biden said the millions of people who have so far chosen to remain unvaccinated have cost American lives.In an effort to get more people protected against COVID-19 and its variants, he announced a string of new orders requiring millions of people to get the shot.The order could impact as many as 100 million people, which is more than two-thirds of the country's total workforce.All employers with 100 or more employees will have to require the vaccine or have workers take weekly COVID-19 tests.Biden says health care workers, both inside and out of hospitals, will have to get vaccinated, as well as all federal employees and contractors."We've been patient, but our patience is wearing thin and your refusal has cost all of us. So please do the right thing,” Biden said.On Thursday, WESH 2’s Kelsi Thorud spoke with Mark Levitt, a local labor and employment lawyer about the new requirements.He said he believes the president does have authority to make the decision but still expects some companies and employees to challenge it."You know unions, other employee groups, not just employee groups, but groups who don't believe in the vaccine, could bring challenges to it,” Levitt said.The president also promised to work hard to stop any governor who tries to challenge the mandates.Gov. Ron DeSantis has been vocal in his opposition to mandating vaccines. The president also called on schools to mandate masks and has asked the TSA to double fines for travelers who won't wear one.
