Knoxville receives key to Fountain City Park as it prepares to close for improvements

Officials said that the park will be closed on Tuesday, Aug. 10 through the end of the month for ADA-related improvements on the greenway.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Fountain City Park will be closed for around three weeks starting Aug. 10 as crews work to make it more accessible for everyone.

On Monday, Knoxville mayor Indya Kincannon received the key to the park to finalize the park's transfer from the Fountain City Lions Club to the city.

The mayor said crews will work on improvements on the greenway related to the American Disabilities Act, which requires facilities to meet specific expectations to accommodate people with disabilities. Closure signs will be placed at the entrance of the park, according to officials.

"Curb cuts, handicapped parking spaces,  also new pathways, repaving old pathways... so all the amenities will be available for people who use wheelchairs and have other mobility issues," Kincannon said. "This park is already great and it's going to be even more accessible and great for the whole community."

The Fountain City Lake, a popular spot for visitors, will stay open.

The City of Knoxville also plans to add a new playground to the park later in 2021.
