Two arrested after being caught in the act of scamming elderly out of thousands in OKC metro
Officers arrested two people from Georgia after police said they ran a "grandparent scam" in the Oklahoma City metro, scamming victims out of thousands of dollars.
Roger Ray, 37, and Jabriex Mann, 27, are now serving time after running a scam in Oklahoma City and Edmond. The two were on the Oklahoma City Police Department's radar after several incidents with victims losing thousands.
Police said Ray and Mann would target elderly people, calling them and giving them detailed fake information about one of their grandchildren being arrested in a deadly accident. They told the victims they had to pay up for the bond and that a courier would come to their homes to pick up the cash.
Officers finally caught the out-of-town crooks on July 30 after a bank teller noticed an elderly customer trying to withdraw more than $15,000 in cash. The teller thought fast and noticed the victim was being scammed.
The bank called police, who were ready to arrest Ray and Mann when they went to the victim's home to collect the money. Edmond police officers waited with the victim for the suspects to knock on the door.
The two were caught in the act and face three counts of conspiracy, obtaining false pretenses and exploitation of the elderly.
