MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person was killed in a shooting Tuesday afternoon in North Memphis, and a local activist says the victim is her grandson.

Police say it happened at a carwash on North Hollywood near Chelsea around 1 p.m. They found a gunshot victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sarah Carpenter of local education organization Memphis Lift identified the victim as her 17-year-old grandson Braylon Murray.

“Braylon was just like this big old teddy bear,” Carpenter said, “He stood about six foot. He was a big guy but he was a baby. I don’t care how old kids get, to their grandparents that’s still your baby.”

Carpenter says she has no idea who shot Braylon or why. Those are questions investigators are trying to answer.

“I don’t care what Braylon did. I don’t want to know what he did,” she said, “I know he didn’t deserve to die like that. No child deserve to die like that. No parent should have to go through that or grandparent or family member.”

Police have not released any suspect information, and have not officially named the victim in the shooting, but confirmed he was 17 years old.
