Update: Corey Mirabal has been convicted of murder in the July 2021 shooting death of Kane Baca after a three-day jury trial, according to a news release from the Marion County Prosecutor's Office on May 18, 2023.

A 23-year-old man was arrested Monday in connection to a fatal shooting last weekend on the west side of Indianapolis, police said.

Corey Mirabal was arrested on a preliminary charge of murder two days after Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officers found 24-year-old Kane Baca shot in the parking lot of an apartment building in the 5900 block of Coquina Key Drive about 4:45 a.m.

Baca was taken in critical condition to a hospital, where he died.

IMPD in a release said "preliminary information" they received at the crime scene led them to identify Mirabal as a suspect in the case.

Mirabal and Baca were roommates, and witness statements indicated the pair were together at the time of the shooting, according to a preliminary police report.

1 weekend. 24 bodies:Indianapolis' coroner has 'never seen it this bad.'

No additional information about the circumstances of the shooting or how police identified Mirabal as a suspect was released. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office on Aug. 5 charged Mirabal with murder and carrying a handgun without a license.
