A male giraffe was born July 31 at the Henry Doorly Zoo, according to Deniss Pate, CEO of the zoo.

The calf is approximately six feet tall, and he is already curious of leaves and twigs, said Pate.

The calf does not have a name, but an auction will take place on September 10 where his name will be auctioned off, said Pate.

His mother, Betty Francis is a first-time mom, said Pate.

She has been a very good mom so far, said Pate.

She cleaned the calf after he was born, and she stands perfectly still when he is nursing, said Pate.

He will nurse for the first couple months and by four-months-old he should be onto solid food, said Pate.

The Henry Doorly Zoo is unsure how the calf will react to the rest of the herd, but Betty Francis likes to be with other giraffes, said Pate.

She is also "reluctant" to go outside, so the zoo is waiting to see how the calf will react to outside, said Pate.

The first step to getting him outside is to introduce him to the rest of the herd, said Pate.

This will happen in the next coming weeks, Pate said.

Guests can see the mom and calf at the Syd and Betty Cate Giraffe Herd Rooms, according to a press release from Henry Doorly Zoo.
