LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Classes begin for Clark County School District students in less than a week. CCSD Superintendent Dr. Jesus F. Jara hosted a back-to-school kickoff event Tuesday morning at Wynn Las Vegas.

Dr. Jara highlighted a number of initiatives that have to do with learning during the pandemic. One of those addresses plunging grades.

Data showed that nearly 51% of middle school students received at least one “F” last semester. That’s more than double what it was the previous year.

Jara says every student will undergo an assessment once they are back in school.

“I have the full confidence in our teachers that they’ll be able to address some of those gaps. This is not going to be something that is solved in one year. This is something that is going to be multiple years. So, the Summer Excelleration may continue and we’re going to look at all these different options for the next three years,” he said.

Jara also addressed other initiatives including grading reform, plans for new pilot schools, and creating a college and career readiness program.
