A Bell Road apartment complex suffered extensive damage following a second alarm fire.

Montgomery Fire Rescue Lt. Jason Selman said crews were called to the complex in the 5000 block of Bell Road about 3:45 p.m. Monday. The only apartments in that block are the Elevate 5050 apartment complex.

"When units arrived there was heavy smoke and flames protruding through the roof and a (working structure fire) was declared," Selman wrote in a news release. "Just a few minutes later a second alarm was declared by the incident commander due to the amount of fire and size of the structure."

The fire took several hours to extinguish, Selman said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Shortly before the fire was reported, a large storm with heavy winds and lightning blew through the River Region.
