Inmate recaptured after escape from Memphis, Tenn. hospital

West Memphis man back in custody after brief chase

Dawn Suggs, a West Memphis man, currently serving a 3-year sentence in Memphis, escaped while at the Regional One Medical Center around 4 a.m. Saturday.

Suggs is incarcerated for Burglary of a Building and his sentence was expected to end Oct. 28, 2022, according to a release.

According to authorities, Suggs slipped away from corrections officers and was seen running north from the hospital, dressed in a hospital gown, his blue jeans, white socks and blue tennis shoe loafers in his hands.

The Memphis Police Department and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office are searched for the inmate and alerted authorities on this side of the bridge about the inmate’s escape and potential for his return to the community. Suggs was spotted later in the day at the Petro Truck Stop in West Memphis. Police sent an unmarked car to reapprehend Suggs and he was taken back into custody after briefly running from officers, according to a West Memphis Police report.

This incident is under review by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and Division of Corrections Internal Affairs Unit, a release said.
