MILTON – The town has signed a purchase-and-sale agreement to acquire land for the new East Milton fire station.

Select board member Michael Zullas said the agreement is for half an acre of land next to the St. Agatha's rectory on Adams Street. The cost is $890,000.

Zullas told the select board last week that the town and and the Boston archdiocese will review the property for 60 days before the purchase is scheduled to be completed.

Zullas said no deposit was required. The full price would be paid at closing. Zullas said the purchase should be completed this fall.

The new station will replace the present East Milton Square fire station, which is outmoded and lacks space for expansion.

The purchase of the land was approved by town meeting in May and is part of a $32.25 million plan to expand and renovate the town's three fire stations.

Milton plans to build a new fire station next to St. Agatha's rectory on Adams Street.

Town meeting approved the plan for a new East Milton fire station in February and voters approved a  temporary tax increase to pay for it.

Fire Chief Chris Madden told the board the new stations will make a big difference for firefighters.

"These new quarters will be huge for our members and will keep them safe," Madden said.
