An Illinois State Police trooper was struck by a car while investigating a crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway near Englewood on the South Side over the weekend.

The state police car, carrying three troopers, had been parked with its emergency lights on in the southbound lanes of the Dan Ryan near 59th Street for a traffic stop about 11:55 p.m. Saturday, according to the state police.

During the stop, a three-car crash happened nearby. As one of the troopers helped with traffic control, the driver of a red Ford failed to yield and the driver’s sideview mirror hit the trooper in the left shoulder and upper arm.

The trooper was taken to the hospital for treatment and released, state police said.

Alcantar Castellanos, 33, was taken into custody and charged with DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol and violating Scott’s Law requiring motorist to slow down and move over when approaching any vehicle with emergency or hazard lights activated.
