The nationwide eviction moratorium is now expired, but Pasadena city leaders said Monday, Aug. 2, residents will remain protected by state and local ordinances through September.

“The federal eviction moratorium has now expired and there are a lot of renters panicking even though they are still protected by our state and local moratoria,” Pasadena spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said in an email shortly after the clock struck midnight on the federal moratorium, passed last year in an effort to prevent millions of Americans from experiencing homelessness as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Anybody with questions about the status of their housing situation is encouraged to call the Housing Rights Center at 626-831-9732 to learn the steps they need to take to stay protected. Stayhousedla.org is another great resource for Los Angeles County residents who need information on eviction moratoriums, renter protections or connection to free legal services, according to Derderian.

“Finally, we encourage renters to apply for state emergency rental assistance if they are behind on rent or struggling to make rent due to the pandemic,” she said, adding the state is now disseminating large sums of rent assistance to eligible renters and landlords.
