BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Rachel Tullos, 33, was getting her COVID test so she could go back to school Sunday morning. She sat in her mother’s car waiting patiently for her turn.
Several shots were fired at Rachel and her mother Debbie Tullos, according to Debbie’s brother-in-law Randy Rice.
“They were waiting in the air-conditioned car when the shooter appeared and obviously tried to hijack the car,” Rice said.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of the suspect in the Sunday morning crime spree as 28-year-old Aaron Morgan. Morgan allegedly started his rampage by stabbing and killing his grandmother, 78-year-old Dianne Gafford, before attacking his mother. His mother was transported to a local hospital and is expected to recover, according to EBRSO.
Morgan then allegedly took his grandmother’s vehicle and fled to Highland Marketplace, where he shot three people while trying to steal their vehicles, including Rachel and Debbie Tullos’.
“We were about two blocks from church, and we got a call that they had been involved in a shooting,” Rice said.
Rice said that Rachel’s injuries are less severe compared to her mother’s. He said that she had surgery after the shooting, but she might need to go back to the operating room.
“Waiting to see if she will have another surgery, the bullet is still in her shoulder,” Rice shared.
Debbie was shot twice in the head, according to Rice, shattering her jaw amongst other injuries.
“Debbie had to head wounds, two bullet head wounds,” Rice shared.
Rice describes Rachel as the personification of innocence He chuckles as he shares that she loves God, her family, and pigs. His face brightens when he speaks about Debbie and her loving cheerful personality.
“If you googled ‘lover of life,’ down there somewhere would say, Debbie Tullos. She looks at life with rose-colored glasses,” Rice said. “When this happens to two beautiful souls like this you just go, ‘why?’ And when is the insanity going to stop?”
