ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — UPDATE: Four individuals who were placed on leave as part of a criminal investigation involving Sheryl Williams Stapleton have returned back to work on Monday.
According to Albuquerque Public School's attorney Luis Robles, those employees include Caia Brown, Ryan Palmer, Rebecca “Becky” Campbell and Curt Spencer, all of which are teachers at Harrison Middle School.
Target 7 found out which Albuquerque Public Schools employees are on leave as part of a criminal investigation involving Sheryl Williams Stapleton.
An assistant superintendent is on that list — along with 11 other people. It's all part of a criminal investigation. This is not only an investigation by the attorney general, but also the feds.
Federal investigators have served a subpoena to APS, saying they want documents involving Sheryl Williams Stapleton. Williams Stapleton is under federal investigation to see if she misspent federal grant money. That's in addition to a separate investigation by the state.
State investigators with the attorney general's office believe she may have used her position as a lawmaker to fund programs she headed at APS, where she works, including a contract with a company called Robotics LLC.
Investigators believe Williams Stapleton transferred close to a million dollars to questionable accounts. Now she is under investigation by two different agencies.
“The last place you want to be is with state authorities looking at your activities and federal authorities looking at your activities, it's the worst place you could find yourself if you're a criminal defense lawyer,” outside legal counsel for APS Luis Robles said.
As of now, there are a dozen APS employees who are on paid leaving during this investigation including associate superintendent Madelyn Serna-Marmol, and Aimee Milazzo, who is Williams Stapleton’s direct supervisor at APS.
The other people that are currently on paid leave and being investigated are:
- Adolphus Washington, Sandia High School teacher
- Scott McLeod, West Mesa High School teacher
- Donald “Don” Gonzales, Eldorado High School teacher
- Vivian Quintana, Van Buren Middle School teacher
- Abigail Manzanares, specialist for Williams Stapleton
- Caia Brown, Harrison Middle School teacher
- Ryan Palmer, Harrison Middle School teacher
- Becky "Rebecca" Campbell, Harrison Middle School teacher
- Curt Spencer, Harrison Middle School teacher
Attorneys for APS say it doesn't mean they have done anything wrong but putting them on leave during an investigation is part of the process and keeps it from being tainted.
In a statement sent out Friday, Williams Stapleton resigned from her job as a state representative. She's still employed with APS and says she has done nothing wrong.
