NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – The Daily Times building is being demolished Monday in Niles.
The place was once home to the newspaper from 1922 to 1993.
The demolition project was delayed a year by the pandemic.
The building was then used by the city’s Water Department for a few years and then eventually for storage. Niles Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz says it will now become a public parking lot as part of their downtown revitalization efforts.
He also says collaboration on the demolition project made the job affordable.
“This is what you get when you have governments working together. The Council of Governments was established a couple years ago through the Engineer’s Office. All of our area elected officials are members of the COG and are on board with the COG’s initiative. And again, it’s just about sharing resources for the betterment of our communities,” Mientkiewicz said.
The demolition is costing $30,000, according to the mayor, and should take a few weeks to finish.
