More than 600 new COVID cases reported in WV over weekend

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia is seeing a spike in COVID-19 infections with 665 new cases reported over the weekend, a major spike in recent days.

The state Department of Health and Human Resources released new numbers Monday that show active cases jumped from 2,057 on Friday to 2,480 on Monday.

Active cases have increased by nearly 1,000 in the last week.

The state recorded 2,949 deaths including three new deaths. The DHHR confirmed a 85 year old man from Fayette County, a 78 year old man from Lewis County and a 78 year old woman from Logan County died of the virus.

“Every life lost to this deadly virus leaves a hole in a family, a community and our state,” said DHHR Cabinet Secretary Bill Crouch. “I offer my deepest sympathies to all who are mourning a loved one today and encourage all West Virginians to receive their COVID-19 vaccine.”

There are 100 Delta variant cases.

The agency reported 56.6 percent of West Virginia residents over the age of 12 are fully vaccinated. More than 68 percent have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Hospitalization numbers were not updated Monday and remain at 152.
