SAN ANTONIO - The punishment phase continues Monday morning for Otis McKane, who was convicted of killing San Antonio Police detective Benjamin Marconi in 2016.

On July 26, jurors wasted little time reaching a unanimous verdict, finding McKane guilty in less than 30 minutes in the capital murder case.

Then McKane added to the drama by trying to make a run for it.

He hit a sheriff's deputy and ran for the door, but didn't get far, as several court officials quickly subdued him. The deputy McKane elbowed was not seriously hurt.

Last week, a dispute over McKane's cell phone records forced a pause to the punishment phase of his capital murder trial.

Prosecutors want the jury to see McKane's phone records from the day of the shooting. They show he took screenshots of how to dismantle a Glock pistol, looked up local news stories about the murder investigation, as well as pictures of Detective Marconi.

But the defense says the prosecution didn't get them enough time to look at the evidence, claiming the DVD they were provided on didn't work.

The judge agreed to give the defense the rest of the week to review McKane's phone records before they're shown to the jury.

The trial will resume at 9 a.m.
