THE CITY’S RENTAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM HAS BASICALLY USED UP ALL OF ITS MONEY, BUT IS STILL TAKING APPLICATIONS AS THEWAY FOR MORE STATE AND FEDALER MONEY. As many as 20,000 New Orleans families are behind on rent and facing eviction after the eviction moratorium put into place during the COVID-19 pandemic ended over the weekend. The city's rental assistance program has basically used up all of its money but is still taking applications as they wait for more state and federal dollars to come in. Now, impacted residents must come up with rent money or an agreed way to catch up, or face being evicted. The cases in court are already stacking up. Many landlords are facing the same problems their tenants do. They have payments to make as well or face the prospect of losing their property.
