August is starting out much more pleasant than the wacky weather of July, as Massachusetts forecasters predict “comfortable” and dry weather for the first days of the month.
Following Sunday’s widespread sunshine and temperatures in the 70s, the region should expect more of the mainly dry weather in the 70s for the first half of the upcoming week.
“It’s very comfortable for this time of year,” said Kristie Smith, meteorologist at the National Weather Service.
“It’s much nicer in terms of the first days of August than the first days of July, so here’s to hoping it’s better than it was previously,” added the meteorologist based in NWS Boston’s Norton office.
Last month was the second wettest July in Boston’s recorded history.
More than 10 inches of rain fell last month — 10.07 inches to be exact — which was second place to the record rainfall of 11.69 inches in 1921. Tropical Storm Elsa in the first half of July helped contribute to the significant rainfall last month, in addition to a series of strong thunderstorms.
It did end up being the wettest July in Worcester’s recorded history. Nearly 14 inches of rain fell (13.85 inches) to top the previous record of 11.41 inches in 1938.
After the dry weather in the first part of the upcoming week, some unsettled weather looks to return for the second half of the week.
There will be chances for showers and thunderstorms in the latter part of the week before a potential warmup into the mid 80s next weekend.
