PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia police officer is recovering after an early Sunday multi-vehicle crash on Penrose Avenue near the Platt Bridge.

The unidentified officer was driving one of two police cars responding to a disabled vehicle on the bridge. A civilian vehicle rear-ended him, knocking his car into the second police unit.

The officer in the second police car was injured and taken to Jefferson Hospital. He was listed in stable condition. The driver of the first police car was unhurt, but his vehicle was totaled.

The driver of the striking vehicle was not arrested, and no charges were filed, Philadelphia Police Cpl. Jasmine Reilly told KYW Newsradio.

This comes just a week after firefighter Thomas Royds was killed by a suspected drunk driver while responding to an accident on I-76. That incident led PennDOT officials to remind people of the "Move Over Law," which requires drivers to slow down to 20 miles an hour below the posted speed limit when passing by an emergency response scene.
