MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) is investigating a fatal shooting of a 2-year-old boy that happened on Sunday, Aug. 1.

MPD says it happened around 1:45 p.m.

Police say children were able to get a hold of a gun and unintentionally discharge it, striking the 2-year-old.

Police say a 26-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested in connection to this incident.

Criminal chargers will be referred to the Milwaukee District Attorney's Office in the upcoming days.

Neighbors tell CBS 58 they didn't even hear the gun go off before sirens began blasting. A passerby say it is shocking how young the victim was.

"Now how would that child even know to pull the trigger, and how did he get access to the gun, with the parents here there has to be some kind of accountability for how that child was able to get that gun for this sad thing which has happened a few times you know," Michael Schwirtz said.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Milwaukee Police at (414) 935-7360 or Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-TIPS or P3 Tips App to remain anonymous.
