Take steps to improve your colon health and reduce the risk of colon cancer

Colon cancer is not a joke, and there are things you could do to detect it. Just by having a colon, you are at risk of having colon cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1 in 23 men and 1 in 25 women will develop colon cancer at some point in their lives. Also, colon cancer is the third most common cancer and the second most common cause of cancer deaths.

Typically the disease will affect individuals over the age of 50; however, the rate amongst younger adults has increased over the last decade. Even if you do not have a family history, and are otherwise healthy, colon cancer unfortunately could still strike.

The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to get tested.

Today there are three methods to test for colon cancer:

  1. A colonoscopy
  2. The fecal immunochemical test (FIT)
  3. Colorguard

A colonoscopy is an endoscopic examination that uses a CCD camera or a fiber optic camera to look at one’s large bowel and the distal part of the small bowel. The entire colonoscopy process typically takes about two to three hours. Once you have reached the age of 50, it is recommended to get routine colonoscopies at least once every ten years.

The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is an examination that tests for blood in the stool. This blood is an early indication of cancer, but this test can only detect blood from the lower intestines. This test is less invasive, as the doctors will examine your stool sample.

Lastly, the Colorguard is a stool-DNA screening test for detecting colon cancer that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This test looks for changes in one’s DNA that may indicate that there is colon cancer or precancerous polyps present in the colon. Like the FIT test, this one is less invasive than the colonoscopy since the test is done by acquiring a stool sample from the patient.
