LA CROSSE, Wisc. (WLAX) — Federal guidance on whether Americans need to wear a mask has a lot of people scratching their heads. The CDC recently did an about-face on one of its recommendations ouf of concern that even vaccinated individuals can infect others with COVID-19.

While the CDC is recommending that millions of people, regardless of vaccination status, now wear masks indoors, it is not a federal mandate. For now, it is still up to states and individual communities to decide how best to proceed, according to the CDC.

“The masking recommendation was updated to ensure the vaccinated public would not unknowingly transmit their unvaccinated or immunocompromised loved ones,” the CDC said.

The White House insists it’s not looking to impose any type of lockdown such as the one Americans underwent last year; however, it’s possible more COVID-19 restrictions are coming.

In the Chippewa Valley, concern regarding the delta variant has the Eau Claire City-County Health Department recommending mask-wearing once again. The recommendation includes those who are fully vaccinated.

The department is asking–but not mandating–everyone over the age of 2 wear a mask in public places.

Some Eau Claire residents said that while it’s frustrating, they are willing to mask up again.

“It’s good to wear a mask again and it’s good to keep everyone safe,” Holly Holbrook said. “I feel as though people do not care about other people and that we need to continue to help others.”
