The theme for the celebration, which is happening from July 31 to August 8, is "Celebrating Gullah Geechee Land & Living Legacy."
Festivities kicked off on Saturday at the Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial Park on Sea Island Parkway on St. Helena Island.
Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah Geechee Nation, celebrated 21 years as 'Queen Mother' at the event.
Hundreds of native Gullah Geechees attended the event Saturday to enjoy food, music, art, dancing and more.
"Gullah Geechee people, we are communal people. We always gather together. To have more than a year where we weren't able to gather as a community and as a group was devastating. So it's a wonderful time to get back together," said Najmah Thomas, a Gullah Geechee community member.
