The state Department of Health reported 110,724 new coronavirus cases this week among Florida residents to bring the cumulative total to 2,590,699. With 409 more fatalities, 39,079 Florida residents are now dead.

This week’s 409 deaths are up from the 282 last week, but deaths can take several days or weeks to be reported. Cases, though, jumped by more than 37,000 week over week, and positivity jumped as well to more than 18%.

The jump in weekly positive cases nearly equals the worst week over week numbers the Sentinel tracked since March 2020. The week from Sunday-Sunday ending Jan. 10 saw 111,574 cases. No other week had more than 100,000 new cases.

Reported deaths have been climbing the last four weeks, but still not near the 1,000 weekly reported deaths several times in January and February as well as last August.

Of note, the new state reports deal only with Florida resident cases – instead of residents and non-residents combined – because the non-resident numbers are no longer available in the new reports.

Across the state, hospitalizations continue to rise with 8.855 people hospitalized with COVID-19 for the seven-day period from July 21-27, according to the latest White House report. In comparison, 5,548 were hospitalized the previous week. The week before that, it was 3,652.

Statewide, 11,757,156 residents, or 61% of ages 12 and up, have received at least one vaccination shot, including 10,046,576, who have completed their shot regimens. The count is a snapshot through July 29.

Statewide, the latest weekly positivity rate reported by the Florida Department of Health was 18.1%, but that’s for new cases only and excludes anyone who previously tested positive. That is up from 15.3% reported last week.

Central Florida added 25,955 resident cases this week, based on actual date the state opened the case, for a total of 489,330: 7,931 more in Orange for 163,417; 4,127 more in Polk for 81,132; 2,160 in Osceola for 52,011; 3,514 in Volusia for 53,212; 3,519 in Brevard for 51,525; 2,420 in Seminole for 42,086; 1,962 in Lake for 35,650; and 322 in Sumter for 10,297.

Deaths are not available by county in the new weekly report.
