American Medical Response has seen a rise in calls from patients needing care for severe cases of COVID-19.
"In April and May of this year, AMR Central Mississippi transported the lowest number of confirmed COVID-infected patients since early in the pandemic," said Jim Pollard, with AMR. "So far this month, we've transported nearly 10 times as many confirmed COVID-infected patients as compared to either April or May."
Not only are officials seeing more cases, but also more young people getting sick. One of the biggest concerns now is getting the virus under control. Pollard said the best way to do that is through vaccinations.
"We urge everyone who is not vaccinated to please obtain the shot, or shots, right away," Pollard said. "Vaccination is the best defense for yourself and everyone else."
Mississippi health officials say the stress on hospitals is on the rise as the numbers of COVID-19 patients increase.
