ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than by booking your seats at one of the dazzling holiday performances coming to Roanoke?
The Berglund Center has already started selling tickets for three spectacular shows that are scheduled to spread some holiday magic in the Star City toward the end of 2021:
‘A Magical Cirque Christmas‘
MagicSpace Entertainment is bringing “the nation’s greatest entertainers” back together for an incredibly spellbinding holiday production in 2021 with ‘A Magical Cirque Christmas!’
This thrilling, festive event will play at the Berglund Performing Arts Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 18, offering fun for the whole family.
“A MAGICAL CIRQUE CHRISTMAS has quickly become a special family holiday tradition and although we were heartbroken to not be able to spend the holidays with our amazing fans in 2020, we are thrilled to be returning to stages around the country with A MAGICAL CIRQUE CHRISTMAS in 2021,” said producer Lee Marshall, MagicSpace Entertainment. “After the last year we’ve all gone through, our amazingly talented cast is very much looking forward to delighting audiences and bringing back the magic of the holidays.”
This season, acclaimed magician Lucy Darling — who was named 2019 Stage Magician of the Year by the Academy of Magical Arts Magic Castle in Los Angeles and appeared on Penn & Teller: Fool Us — will be joining the all-star cast as the master of ceremonies.
David Copperfield has said, “Lucy Darling is a true original – hilarious and delightful. An exceptional new talent in magic,” according to the Berglund Center.
In ‘A Magical Cirque Christmas,’ organizers say Darling will take audiences through an evening of dazzling performers and breathtaking cirque artists, accompanied by live performances of their favorite holiday music.

‘The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Musical‘
The Elf on the Shelf Scout Elves are returning to center stage this holiday season for the live musical that has captured many families’ hearts.
Inspired by the beloved box set, ‘The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition,’ this touring stage spectacle uses music and dance to transport audiences to the North Pole for a glimpse into the magical lives of Santa’s Scout Elves.
“This toe-tapping tale tells the story of one particularly impressive Scout Elf who must help his new, human family remember the importance of Christmas cheer. Can this tiny elf, along with a host of North Pole pals, make Christmas joyous for his family once again?” the Berglund Center said in a statement on Monday, July 26. “Featuring an original story and score, dazzling sets and costumes, and heartfelt moments that will bring the family together, this joyous and uplifting celebration will leave audiences captivated by the splendor of the season.
‘The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Musical’ will come to the Berglund Performing Arts Theatre at 6 p.m. on Dec. 1. Tickets start at $31.92 and went on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 30 online, by phone at 1-877-482-8496, or at the Berglund Center Box Office.
‘The Hip Hop Nutcracker’
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 129-year-old ballet has been reimagined as a holiday dance spectacle in ‘The Hip Hop Nutcracker,’ which is arriving at the Berglund Performing Arts Theatre at 7 p.m. on Dec. 15.
The dance production features hip hop pioneer Kurtis “The Breaks” Blow, the first rapper to be signed by a major label in 1979. Even after 42 years and a heart transplant, this hip-hop founding father is still performing as MC of The Hip Hop Nutcracker.
“Through the isolation of the pandemic and for me, personally, the gift of receiving a new heart, it is time to hope again,” said Kurtis Walker, known professionally as Kurtis Blow. “And the season of hope is Christmas.”
A cast of a dozen all-star dancers, an on-stage DJ, and an electric violinist turn this beloved ballet’s score on its head across a 31-city tour.
“It’s incredible for me to meet fans, and their kids and their kids’ kids who love hip hop music,” said Blow. “It reminds me of how The Nutcracker brings people of all ages together too. I hope everyone makes holiday memories for a lifetime when they come to our show.”
“Just like the classic Nutcracker story, in The Hip Hop Nutcracker Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker prince go on a dream adventure battling a gang of mice, visiting the land of sweets, and learning the lessons of the holiday season. Innovative digital graffiti and visuals transform the landscape of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s beloved story from traditional 19th Century Germany to the vibrant, diverse sights and sounds of a colorful and contemporary New York City,” stated a release shared by the Berglund Center on July 13. “Through the modern, self-expressive gaze of hip hop culture, the dynamic performers of The Hip Hop Nutcracker celebrate the magic of the entire holiday season on the most inclusive holiday of them all – New Year’s Eve, a time for new beginnings.”
