Sheetz is offering a consolation gift to University of Pittsburgh students disappointed that a store is in fact not coming to Oakland.

Throughout the month of August, Pitt students can treat themselves to a free fizz drink or coffee at regional Sheetz locations.

The offer for Pitt students comes after many were disappointed to learn a sign suggesting Sheetz was coming to a site near campus was erroneous.

A sign bearing the Sheetz logo and the words “Coming soon!” was spotted on a chain link fence at a former Marathon gas station on Forbes Avenue last weekend. Students at the University of Pittsburgh “rejoiced” at the news, The Pitt News reported.

The sign was quickly debunked.

Harry Hammel, who handles public relations for Altoona-based Sheetz, confirmed Monday that Sheetz would not be opening a location at the site, leaving some students disappointed.

In a Tweet directed to Pitt students, Sheetz wrote, “Even though we aren’t coming to your campus, treat yourself to a free Fizz or coffee on us through August!”

To participate, students must have a valid student ID from the university. The offer is only valid at Pittsburgh-area locations.

The former Marathon site on Forbes between Semple and McKee — where the sign incorrectly announcing a new Sheetz was found — is slated to be developed as a 300-unit apartment complex. Chicago-based CA Ventures is awaiting approval from Pittsburgh’s planning commission for their project.
