Driver in deadly Durham crash was impaired, didn't have valid license, police say

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Durham police identified the person who died in a crash along Junction Road early Monday morning.

The crash happened just before 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Junction Road and Inlet Avenue.

Police said a vehicle, driven by Everardo Garcia, left the road. He overcorrected, causing the vehicle to go airborne.

The vehicle hit a utility pole and a tree. Paulo Mendoza and another man, both of Durham, were ejected from the vehicle, police said. Authorities said they were not wearing seatbelts.

Garcia, also of Durham, and the other man were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Mendoza was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said preliminary investigation indicates that speed and alcohol were factors.

Garcia was issued a citation for Driving While Impaired and Driving While License Revoked. A warrant for arrest was also issued for Garcia for second-degree murder, aggravated felony death, aggravated felony serious injury, careless and reckless driving and no car insurance.
