Mother, 10-year-old daughter killed in Queens crash; suspected drunk driver arrested

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A Queens man who police say was speeding while driving drunk crashed into another car near JFK Airport on Saturday night, killing a Long Island woman and her 10-year-old daughter, and injuring three passengers in his vehicle, including two children.

The cars collided at 8:45 p.m. at Rockaway Boulevard and Guy R. Brewer Boulevard, just north of the airport.

Police said a 42-year-old man was speeding westbound on Rockaway Boulevard in a Nissan Altima when he collided with a Chevy Cruze that was headed east and making a left turn onto Guy R. Brewer Boulevard.

A 31-year-old woman driving the Chevy, identified as Diana Granobles of Copiague, and her 10-year-old daughter, Isabella Granobles, suffered severe injuries, police said.

The mom and daughter were rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as Tyrone Absolam of Queens, was taken to Jamaica Hospital in serious condition. A 38-year-old woman who was in the passenger seat was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Two children—a 12-year-old boy and 16-year-old girl—who were in the backseat of the Nissan were taken to Long Island Jewish Cohen Children's Medical Center in serious but stable condition.

Absolam was arrested and faces charges of manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, assault and driving while intoxicated.
