STATE OF RECOVERY Buffalo's economy is bouncing back from the pandemic. The data shows it.

The biggest challenge for many local businesses is hiring new workers.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Business for Robert Gralke’s company took a nosedive when the COVID pandemic hit.

No one was flying and since commercial airlines are a large portion of his business, sales for North American Carbide fell by more than 50 percent.

But as the country returns to a semblance of normalcy, the Orchard Park manufacturer of carbide inserts also is recovering. Getting new customers outside of airlines has helped and business is back to about 85 percent of 2019 revenue, according to Gralke, the CEO.

Now the largest hurdle is hiring workers.
