Man fatally shot at apartment near 12th Street and Campbell Avenue

A 34-year-old man was shot and killed Wednesday night at an apartment complex near 12th Street and Campbell Avenue, Phoenix police said. 

At about 7:30 p.m., officers responded to the shooting after witnesses reported hearing shots fired inside an apartment at the complex, Phoenix police spokesperson Sgt. Mercedes Fortune said in a news release Thursday. 

A man was found inside the apartment with gunshot injuries that were life threatening, Fortune said.

He was taken to a hospital and ultimately pronounced dead, Fortune said. The man was not identified by police as of Thursday morning. 

The suspect in the shooting fled before police arrived, according to Fortune. 

An investigation was ongoing.
