Oakland police are asking for help in identifying a man seen brazenly breaking into several parked cars near Lake Merritt on Wednesday afternoon.

The break-ins along Lakeshore Ave. in the Lake Merritt business district were captured on video by a witness at about 12:30 p.m. Police said when a man – whose own vehicle double-parked – was seen smashing car windows in the 3200 block of Lakeshore Ave., going from car to car in quick fashion.

The suspect smashed windows of at least two different vehicles.

He was wearing a yellow knit hat and a distinctive jacket that had the word "SUGARHILL" written across the top of the back.

"This brazen crime happened in the middle of the day, in one of our busiest business districts," Chief LeRonne Armstrong said. "I thank our community member who safely captured this crime in progress on video, and to those who called 911. Together, we unite to STAND UP FOR A SAFE OAKLAND."

Anyone with information is asked to 510-238-3951.
