Harkins Theatres is closing its North Valley 16 location.

“After over 20 years of entertaining moviegoers, we are beginning the process of closing the curtain on our beloved North Valley 16,” the company said in a statement. “Because of the age of the theatre, a substantial reinvestment would have been necessary in order to make the theatre viable for the future, which was not feasible.”

The theater, located at 3420 E. Bell Road in Phoenix, will remain open “until an official closing date is determined closer to the end of the year.”

Harkins has been remodeling several of its theaters in the last few years. But the COVID-19 pandemic, which wreaked havoc on theaters generally, slowed the progress.

The company’s statement suggests that the area won’t be without a theater forever.

“While we are closing this chapter,” the statement says, “stay tuned for exciting information about our future plans for a new state-of-the-art theatre nearby.”
