NBC Universal, Inc.

A two-alarm fire at San Francisco's National Hotel, next door to American Conservatory Theater's Strand Theater near Civic Center BART Station, sent thick plumes of smoke across Market Street on Sunday evening.

The building was evacuated with one person injured and two dogs were also rescued, according to San Francisco fire's Twitter account.

The Red Cross is offering the residents support, according to a 6:26 p.m. tweet by District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney.

Firefighters with the San Francisco Fire Department are battling a 2-alarm apartment fire in the SoMa neighorhood.

The fire is under control but still being extinguished, Haney said. According to the Tenderloin Housing Clinic website, the National Hotel has 90 units of permanent supportive housing for San Francisco citizens who previously faced chronic homelessness.

Firefighters, via the San Francisco Firefighters Local 798 Twitter account, posted a video showing visible flames coming from the lower back side of the building in the 600 block of Odd Fellows Way (also known as Stevenson Street), an alley off Seventh Street just south of Market Street, at 5:52 p.m.

Firefighters are asking citizens to avoid the area and to be mindful of smoke inhalation. Nearby residents are asked to close their windows.
