Man killed, woman wounded in afternoon shooting outside Bronx church

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A shooting outside a Bronx church in the middle of the afternoon on Saturday left a man dead and a bystander wounded, police said Sunday.

Shots were fired near Prospect Avenue and E. 166th Street in Morrisania shortly after 2:30 p.m., according to police.

Responding officers found a 42-year-old man lying unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds to his body outside St. Anthony of Padua.

A 28-year-old woman was found nearby with three graze wounds to her body.

Both victims were taken to Lincoln Hospital, where the man was pronounced dead and the woman was treated and released. The man was later identified as Vaughn Flanders.

Police told the New York Post that the woman was a bystander and that the shooting was not connected to any activities at the church.

No arrests had been reported in the shooting as of Sunday.

Multiple people were killed and more wounded in shootings across the city between Friday and Saturday.
