Police arrest suspects, seek another for shooting that killed 14-year-old at Lubbock apartment

Staff reports

Police on Sunday announced two people have been arrested in connection to a shooting that left a 14-year-old boy dead Wednesday night at a central Lubbock apartment.

Mifford Malicke Hannon, 17, and a male juvenile were arrested early Saturday in Abernathy, charged with murder in the death of 14-year-old Dequavion Traylor about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday at the Ella Apartments in the 1100 block of 58th Street, according to a Lubbock police statement Sunday morning.

An ongoing Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit investigation has determined three suspects approached the apartment with the intent to rob a narcotics dealer in the unit, according to police.

Upon arrival, an altercation occurred in the apartment that resulted in a juvenile male fatally shooting Traylor. The three suspects then fled on foot and were picked up by a white pickup truck and continued to flee the area.

At approximately 4:45 a.m. Saturday, Hannon and the male juvenile offender who allegedly shot Traylor were arrested in Abernathy by investigators with the Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit and the Texas Anti-Gang Center. Hannon was taken by the Abernathy Police Department to the Hale County Detention Center and booked on a charge of murder. He is being held on a $500,000 bond. The male juvenile was transported to the Lubbock County Juvenile Justice Center. A third suspect has not been named and no other arrests had been announced by Sunday.

This case remains under investigation by the Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit.
