NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – A dance party in Washington Square Park early Saturday morning ended with three people assaulted, police said.
One victim was stabbed and another slashed after a dispute erupted during the party at the park. Video from earlier in the night shows people dancing.
Police said a group of about 50 people was dancing around 2:15 a.m. when three people got into an argument over a woman.
One person was slashed in the left leg and another was stabbed in the left leg. A third person was also assaulted, police said.
All three victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and released.
Police said the group was uncooperative and that no arrests have been made.
“The NYPD works hard to ensure safety at Washington Square Park,” the department tweeted Saturday. “Last night, 3 people were assaulted — 1 stabbed, 1 slashed. As the investigation continues, we’re asking for the public’s help to ensure the park is safe for every New Yorker.”
Nearly two dozen people were arrested and eight police officers were hurt in clashes over a 10 p.m. curfew at the park last weekend.
The 10 p.m. curfew was first instituted during Memorial Day weekend after some neighborhood residents complained of late-night noise and drug use.
The curfew was in effect again last weekend, however there was some confusion about the curfew leading into this weekend. Officials planned to return to the park's normal closing time of midnight this weekend, according to PIX11.
A Parks Department spokesperson told the outlet: “We continue to work with PD to find the right balance of education and enforcement against illegal and after hour activities that impact the park and the neighborhood. Enforced closures have been focused on addressing large after hours gatherings, amplified sound, excessive trashing of the park and other conditions on weekends.”
