FOSTER CITY, CA — Foster City police urged residents to lock their vehicles after a recent rise in thefts from vehicles.

In a news release on Thursday, Police Chief Tracy Avelar said the unidentified suspects may have used garage door openers found in unlocked vehicles to enter garages and steal additional items.

While there haven’t been reports of suspects entering homes through the garage, Avelar said “the potential for this scenario to occur once access to an attached garage is gained remains a significant concern of our agency.”

Police asked residents to lock their cars whenever parked, especially overnight. Garage door openers should also be removed from a vehicle that is parked outside, police said.

Police are working on several leads, according to Avelar.
