A man was stabbed to death during an argument with another man near a homeless encampment in Long Beach on Thursday night, April 15, police said.

Police responded to a battery call behind a store, near a homeless encampment, in the 6700 block of Cherry Avenue and found a man with stab wounds at around 6 p.m., police said in a Friday statement. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Detectives believe the two men were arguing when the suspect stabbed the victim and then fled before officers arrived. It wasn’t yet known if either of the men was homeless, police spokesman Richard Mejia said.

The victim’s identity was not yet known.
