ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Department says it is talking to Buffalo police as it works to find a way to curb illegal dirt bike and ATV use on city streets.

Police Chief Cynthia Herriot-Sullivan says Buffalo is seeing success by imposing a $2,500 fine for those caught riding illegally to get their bikes back. If the person doesn't pay the fee, the bike is scrapped.

Herriot-Sullivan also spoke with Rochester City Council about the possibility of setting up a hotline specifically for the issue. She says the bottom line is keeping people safe.

"What struck me about one of these cases was with the young man and he had the woman riding with him and at the speed he was going, the reckless way he was driving, I mean the disregard for life and safety there. I don't know if that's someone who is going to listen to the rules and follow safety measures," said the chief.

Both the police department and city council say they may need to change the municipal code so RPD can charge a fee for these illegal vehicles.
