(KMOX) - There's a lot of state pride for people from both Missouri and Illinois, so some might be a bit disappointed to see how their states faired in head-to-head matchups with the 49 others.

A new survey asked more than 1,000 Americans to pick the better of two states in a series of questions to find out which states are the best and worst. The results may come as a surprise to some:

As seen in the recent study done by YouGov, Americans picked Hawaii as their number one state and Colorado at No. 2. Rounding out the top five were Virginia, Nevada and North Carolina.

Missouri and Illinois ranked 43rd and 39th on the list, respectively. Missouri won only 41.9% of its matchups and Illinois won 43.9%. Overall, the south and Midwest took big hits, with the majority of the bottom 10 coming from those regions.

YouGov says it asked 1,211 US citizens over the age of 18 to participate in the poll, which ran from March 12-15.
